India's small and medium enterprises ( SMEs) make up the lion's share of the country's food processing industry, which is expected to generate 9 million jobs by 2024 and contribute more than $535 billion to the country's GDP, per the Indian Brand Equity Foundation.
But what makes India's small and medium enterprises stand out is their focus on sustainability, writes Vicky Dodani in the Financial Express.
"From artificial intelligence and machine learning to robotics and automation, SMEs are harnessing the power of these transformative tools to enhance efficiency, reduce waste, and improve food safety," she writes.
"They recognize that our future depends on ecologically sound solutions to our food processing challenges."
Indeed, the Indian food processing market is estimated to reach $535 billion by 2025, growing at a compound annual growth rate of 15.2%, thanks to the growing number of SMEs in the sector.
"From using energy from renewable sources to developing novel biodegradable packaging, these forward-thinking enterprises are leading the charge in reducing waste, conserving resources, and promoting a more sustainable food industry," Dodani writes.
