The Death of Hollywood

"We are in a death spiral.

The only way out is to go back to the creativity and first principles," filmmaker Aresh Amel writes on his website.

"We need to get back into the kitchen, and kickstart our R&D again."

Amel says Hollywood is in a "death spiral" because studios have reduced the role of the "creative movie executive to corporate brand manager" in the name of Wall Street and fear of the new, leaving us with "tired sequels of sequels with aging stars, and tired formats."

"No other business survives this level of negligence in R&D," Amel writes.

"We have no younger generation of bankable movie starsbecause we haven’t invested in the type of theatrical movies that typically built them; because studios abandoned lower-budget original (or fresh IP) genre movies."

Amel says he's seen "incredible" creative execs struggle, but "the remake cupboard is empty, the larder of creative properties have been exhausted."

So what can we do? "The only way out is to go back to the creativity and first principles," Amel writes.
