Drug Addicts Getting Clean in Kitchen of Fresh Start Recovery Program

Drug addicts are getting another chance in the kitchen of Western Australia's Fresh Start Recovery Program.

Fresh Start is an addiction treatment centre help drug users and their families recover from substance abuse. The program also provides detox and counseling and has developed a system for a drug-free lifestyle.

One of the participants in the program is David Tarrant-Banks. Nowadays, Tarrant-Banks is clean and working full time as a chef and is soon to be reunited with his daughter, all thanks to the Fresh Start program. He has been working for the Fresh Start Recovery Program's social enterprise, Hill Catering Company.

Fresh Start also help recovering addicts find jobs at Fresh Start's Hill Cafe, based in the Northam Health Service and at Hill Contracting Company, where they take mowing lawn and landscaping jobs.

Fresh Start social enterprise coordinator Tina Gunter said working in one of the program's social enterprises not only helped prepare former addicts for the workforce, but it made them experience the benefits of thinking of more than themselves.
