A social enterprise brewery that turns leftover bread into beer is closing in on its goal of saving 1 billion slices of bread from being wasted every year.
Toast Ale, based in London, says it has saved 2.5 million slices of bread since it was founded in 2016 and plans to reach its "earthshot" goal of 1 billion slices by year's end, the Guardian reports.
The company says it has also reduced energy and water use in the brewing process and saved 49 tons of CO2 since its inception.
Toast Ale has made its beer recipe open-source and works with 86 breweries in 10 countries to share its model, National Geographic reports.
"We set out with a mission to rely great beers and spread big ideas that can change the world, and are proud of the positive impact we have," says co-founder and COO Louisa Ziane.
"We're excited to be able to scale our work to support bakeries and reinvest to embrace the circular economy."
