Civic Engagement: Themes & Lessons

Stefanie Le, a research assistant and writer at the Ash Center for Democratic Governance and Innovation, contributes a literature review distillation on civic engagement material that focuses on general themes, recommendations and challenges gleaned from academic journals, media articles and nonprofit briefs from literature reviews gathered this year.

Le shares the biggest themes and challenges about utilizing civic engagement in cities. She writes about the best practices and lessons that can be taken from the existing literature.

Part I is General Themes in Civic Engagement, which includes these themes: building technology with communities, motivation behind civic engagement, and investing in the infrastructure of engagement.

Part II points out to Challenges and recommendations in Enacting Civic Engagement, which features themes such as: diversity in civic engagement, access to technology, and listening to the community.
