Athens received a $3500 grant from an Indiana based Dekko Foundation. Athens' city-mayor Ronnie Marks has placed the decision of where most of this money will go within the hands of youth involved in his Youth Commission.
Marks has allotted $500 dollars to go towards his Youth Commission which serves high school students to teach them about local government and the importance of volunteer work. The remainder of the money will be divvied out as the youth see's fit.
The commission will entertain applications from not for profit groups all vying for the grant money, specifying how the money will be used and outlining how the community will benefit from the project. There is a deadline of March 4 for applications to be submitted.
