Literacy grants allow focused reading instruction

Much of life depends on literacy so a lack of reading skills hinders a student far beyond school years. In an effort to ensure literary competence by third grade, grants specifically targeted at literacy have been granted to students in the State of Michigan.

A multi-tiered instructional system has been implemented with students most in need receiving more of the instruction. Groups comprised of one to three students receive instruction on reading skills during 20-30 minute sessions. Parents receive specific information about effective ways to work with their student on literacy skills. Summer instruction is available to enhance reading skills retention during the break.

This approach to increasing literacy among students in Kindergarten to second grade has been effective and popular among parents, students, and teachers.
