Innovative Virtual Care Program Extended to Families Across Nsw

Parents in New South Wales, Australia, can now avoid the 45-minute drive to their nearest hospital by taking their kids to see an expert via videoconferencing.

The virtualKIDS Urgent Care Service is now available in all of New South Wales and was piloted in December 2022 across three local health districts, reports the Sydney Morning Herald.

"It allows families to be seen faster while reducing pressure on already stretched emergency departments and our frontline healthcare workers," says a doctor with the Sydney Children's Hospitals Network, which runs the service in partnership with healthdirect.

The virtualKIDS clinical nurse consultant examined 4-year-old Henry via videoconferencing after he developed a stomach bug, and a paediatrician "guided me through how to manage his condition with existing medications and signs to keep an eye out for in case he deteriorated," Henry's mom, Skye, tells Australia's ABC News.

"The team that supported us was incredibly helpful and reassuring and we were able to provide Henry with the necessary care, all from the comfort of our home," she adds.

The program has already helped more than 1,000 families since its formal expansion last month, and it's expected to help at least 500 children and their families per month.
