Back in 2009, the Mahoning Valley's Network of 1,180 nonpofits was worth nearly $4 billion. These nonprofit organizations award funds to various charitable causes that range from hospitals and public libraries to scholarships.

A review of these nonprofits showed that according to those who operate several generous foundations of the Valley, charities lack transparency; foundations often are negletcted by out-of-town backs; and that, foundations are oftentimes created as a result of heartbreaking events.
