President and CEO Robert K. Ross, M.D. of The California Endowment shares a study conducted by the Urban Strategies Council with the findings saying that African American male students in Oakland schools are more likely to face harsh school discipline, have low attendance rates, and be off track for graduation.

And now, schools and school districts across California have pioneered new approaches to school discipline focused on reforming overly harsh policies that suspend or expel students while still holding them accountable for their conduct.
