A Georgia high school senior who describes her art as "very stylized" and "based on cubism and expressionism" has won a $50,000 scholarship.

Karla Rosas, an International Baccalaureate student at Dalton High School, received the Bernice Spigel Prize for Excellence in the Visual Arts from the Creative Arts Guild of Dalton/Whitfield County.

"The scholarship means that I am capable of creating art, and I might have a chance of making it as an artist," the 17-year-old says.

Rosas, who plans to attend the College of the Ozarks in Missouri after graduating high school, tells the Chattanooga Times Free Press that she hopes to use the money to start her own studio.

"I've noticed a lot of people prefer realism and realistic art," she says.
