The Breakthrough Institutea think tank dedicated to advancing nuclear energysays the US is on the verge of running out of time to meet its energy needs and is calling for major changes to the way the Nuclear Regulatory Commission regulates nuclear power, the New York Times reports.
According to the Breakthrough Institute, the NRC's current mission is "primarily concentrated on nuclear safety, which leads to unwarranted delays in reactor licensing."
"The NRC should consider the negative impacts from a public health, climate, and environmental perspective of not licensing a power reactor at a site that would otherwise be used for a fossil fuel-fired power plant," the group says in a report.
The Breakthrough Institute says the NRC's current regulatory system is outdated and needs to be modernized to meet the country's energy and environmental needs.
The group wants the NRC to focus more on alternative energy sources, like wind and solar power, and less on nuclear power.
The NRC says it will consider the Breakthrough Institute's recommendations when deciding whether to accept or reject new reactor applications.
