A 19-year-old clarinettist from Queensland, Australia, is being hailed as one of the best in the world after a concert with the Queensland Youth Symphony.
Lewis Blanchard played Aaron Copland's Clarinet Concerto in a program featuring works from the 20th century, including Ravel's "Daphnis et Chlo ? ', No.2 from his ballet of the same name, the Guardian reports.
"While the opening was beautifully controlled by Blanchard, with a haunting and emotionally invested legato, the orchestra delivered a fiercely and emotionally invested legato, displaying excellent technique and well-phrased melodic intensity," writes Peter Fitzhugh in the Sydney Morning Herald.
"Blanchard is more confident with technical playing, particularly from the violins," he adds.
"He may be able to relax sufficiently to have some fun, thus allowing the jazz clarinettist to flourish."
The program was conducted by Simon Hewett, who recently took over as artistic director of the Queensland Youth Symphony.
