Floods aren't just a problem for Nepal's farmers, but for the country's entire rural population as a whole.
That's why a coalition of organizations has come up with what it says is a first-of-its-kind flood insurance plan for farmers, Quartz reports.
The plan, which is being rolled out by a group called Practical Action, uses an index-based approach to calculate a farmer's risk of flooding, then hands out money to those who qualify based on that risk.
"The situation is worsening due to climate change," a member of the group tells Quartz.
"Significant portions of the population, over 65% of whom rely heavily on agriculture, are vulnerable to floods."
Quartz notes that Nepal is sandwiched between India and China in the Himalayas, which makes it prone to floods.
According to a press release, floods killed more than 4,400 people in Nepal in 2015more than any other country in the world.
And the country's farmers are some of the most vulnerable, Quartz notes.
According to the press release, only about 1% of the country's farmers have flood insurance.
That's why the new plan is so important.
It "means not only financial relief but also the hope of a more resilient future
