Texas Families Could Get $8000 in Tax Dollars to Send Kids to Private Schools

Texas families would be able to use public money to send their kids to private schools under a new bill introduced in the state Senate last week, the Houston Chronicle reports.

State Sen.

Brandon Creighton introduced Senate Bill 8, which would give families up to $8,000 in taxpayer money per child to pay for private school through an educational savings account.

"When a school does fall short of excellence, when it strays too far from the fundamentals or simply cannot meet the unique needs of a particular child, parents should not be helpless," Creighton said in introducing the bill.

"Giving parents the power to determine the best school for their child will encourage competition and innovation, ensuring that each Texas student has the opportunity to succeed."

Gov.

Greg Abbott has been pushing for similar bills in the state.

A recent University of Houston Hobby School of Public Affairs poll found 61% of Texans supported education vouchers for low-income families, while 53% supported vouchers for all families regardless of income.
