Northwestern University professor and dancer Thomas DeFrantz is the recipient of a $500,000 grant from the Mellon Foundation to expand a research project on African-American dance, the Chicago Tribune reports.

According to a press release, DeFrantz's project, called SLIPPAGE: Performance|Culture|Technology, will use technology such as drones, cameras, and sensors to follow dancers' movements and tell a story.

"We will continue to explore how Black dance matters and how its variegations of place predict an abundance of performance methods and dance styles," DeFrantz says.

SLIPPAGE: Performance|Culture|Technology was founded in 2002 at MIT.

It has performed in India, France, Japan, and South Africa.
