President Barack Obama awarded Medals of Freedom, the nation's highest civilian honor, to thirteen cultural and political icons, saying that the recipients have marked my life in profound ways.

According to The White House, the Medal of Freedom lauds individuals who have made meritorious contributions to the security or national interests of the United States, to world peace, or to cultural or other significant public or private endeavors.
