Both Jackson and Harmon County are facing two major public crisis. The first is that the general population lacks above basic-level literary skills. Second, approximately 20 percent of the population was reported as having limited activity last month, which is reflective of the general health issues facing the people. Heart disease and cancer are the leading causes of deaths for these populations.
In order to tackle the issue, an educational grant project was created via legislative and organizational means. The Great Plains Literacy Council has recruited assistants in order to facilitate the methods for learning English as well as identifying health related goals for the target adult population, especially those who speak English as a second language. Ultimately, the solution appears to be a hybrid fix that addresses both problems.
