How Does Grant Money Affect What journalists Cover, and How They Report?

What do journalism funders, journalists, and philanthropy have in common? We tend to think mass communications like journalism should keep an independent and un-biased stand on its stories. The trend many are seeing are the influx of funds being put into specific topics and stories instead of in subjects that may provide a more progressive outlook for its consumers.

For example, a 1 million dollar Robert Wood Johnson grant to WNYC to create a health concerned unit showed an outcome of greater knowledge in health related concerns for its New York subscribers. This leads to better understanding of health and a possibly prolonged life.

Another trend can be seen with CNN anchor Campbell Brown's funded education reform news site which seems to pump out biased education news. The basic message is: pay attention to what is being funded and how it corresponds to certain outputs of media
