Legislative Change to Charity-Care Rules

Senate Majority Leader James Clayborne Jr. has agreed to sponsor the proposal from the Illinois Hospital Association to expand the definition of charity care which is used to determine whether nonprofit medical centers can maintain tax-exempt status.

Gov. Pat Quinn's call for negotiation of the hospitals which were stripped with the exemptions has not yet produced a deal after several months.
