Strengthening Democracy in the Digital Age

Sam Gill, vice president of communities and impact at Knight, shares details about the Knight Foundation's recent $50 million investment to develop a new field of research around technology's impact on democracy.

Gill writes that "we now expect information to be available where we want it and when we want it."

Gill, however, argues that if digital technology would be left unchecked and unquestioned, it could threaten the future of democracy.

Gill points out that now, solutions are needed, but they must be driven and supported by new ideas, new evidence and new knowledge - all the reason why Knight has announced its huge $50 million investment to help support an emerging field of research around how society is informed in the digital age.

The investment is geared towards two things: 1) the creation and acceleration of significant study centers, and 2) the dedication of $11 million for future investments that support policy and legal research.
