In a Live Mint opinion piece, it explores the dichotomy between relief of distress and development of capabilities that runs through the NGO sector.

Arun Maira, Chairman of HelpAge International, shares The UK Charity Commission's report that finds even power corrupts and can penetrate philanthropic organisations and government aid programmes, even if the purpose is to do good as a whole.

Maira adds that the fundamental difference between charity and genuine developmental support is the relationship between providers and beneficiaries.

Charity flows from wealthy and powerful patrons while good development partners are "allies" who work alongside.

The UK Charity Commission's report ends with a firm warning that "charities must never lose sight of why they exist and must demonstrate how their charitable purpose drives everything they do".

Maira writes that in the world of development, small can be more effective and beautiful too.
