Pre-to-3: Providing Child Care is a 'Twofer' for Schools

A recent Pre-to-3 column offers insight on the different organizations, including public schools, that are making way for safe and appropriate child care facilities.

The Lanesboro Child Care Center is a program that is designed as a recruitment tool to answer the call for the community's need for child care when an in-home provider closed. The program has a long waiting list, especially for infants.

In the mid-1980s, the program is the first in the State of Minnesota to offer daycare within the school system.

According to Superintendent Matt Schultz, while jobs are available in small towns, it's often the lack of child care that keeps job seekers from moving to rural areas.

The program now serves about 65 children, from infants to 5 years and another 45 school-age children in before- and after-school care.

Linda Smith, Director of Bipartisan Policy Center's Early Childhood Initiative which profiled the program, said that there is no more pressing issue for child care in this country than the need for facilities.
