American are very generous, donating over $400 billion to charities in 2017. However, not all charities benefited equally. The largest gifts went to nonprofit organizations, leaving many smaller charities struggling. At the annual presentation of giving, the Giving USA annual report sought to shed light on the local organizations raise money.

The report stated that in 2016, charitable giving set a record, topping $400 billion in the U.S. The increase was partly due to the increase in the S&P 500, stocks being a source of gifts. In addition, the report stated that 70 percent of the giving was from individual donors but giving by foundations also showed strong growth. Disaster relief funding topped $400 million.

Despite the higher numbers, Rob Reifsnyder from United Way said that the share of individual Americans donating to charity is falling. He said that individuals should remember that even small gifts make a difference.
