The first Dan River Autism Awareness 5K raised about $22,000. A portion of the funds were donated to advocacy and research organization Autism Speaks while the majority of the money established the Autism Education Fund through the Community Foundation of the Dan River Region.
The fund will support autism education-related programs and organizations helping educators and families in the community and nonprofits may apply for grants through the Community Foundation.
