Cape Breton creative hub receives $5-mil federal investment

The Canada Cultural Spaces Fund of the Department of Canadian Heritage is awarding a $5 Million grant to assist in creating the Cape Breton Centre for Arts, Culture and Innovation, to be located in Sydney, Nova Scotia. The Holy
Angels Convent in Sydney will be renovated and receive new equipment that will transform it into a creative hub.

There will be 25 artist studios, other sound-proof studios and rehearsal space, improved lighting and accessibility, and multipurpose gallery space. The federal government is interested in creative growth, so it is funding the space to allow aspiring artists to both create their work and share it with others, through a program called Creative Canada.

Rankin MacSween, President and CEO of The New Dawn Centre for Social Innovation (NDCSI), feels that the project will revitalize the downtown area, double the building's life, and provide as many as 150 artists a permanent home.
