Grants may be harder to come by

Folks here love federally funded assets such as the Stones River Greenway, but future grants may be harder to obtain as Congress confronts a $15 trillion debt and competition for funding becomes fiercer.

And that's how it should be, according to U.S. Rep. Diane Black, the Gallatin Republican who represents Rutherford County.

"We should be living within our means, which we have not been doing in a long time," Black said in a recent interview with The DNJ. "From my experience, I do think the grant application process needs to be re-evaluated. I think every grant program, every dollar that we spend at the federal level, should be scrutinized. Every penny should be looked at."

Government department authorities should always have a competitive process to choose which communities demonstrate the greatest need for federal funding, and congress should not be directly involved in those decisions, Black said.
