Phuket to host first social enterprise to boost rural economy

In Thailand, a committee under a government project for rural development started its first social enterprise, an entity in Phuket named "Pracharath Rak Samakkee Phuket". Legally, the enterprise will be a business entity that develops rural business and communities, with the goal of increasing the income and standard of living of people in rural regions. Phuket was chosen among five provinces for its good infrastructure and business environment.

The enterprise will cooperate with three groups: in addition to the community, it will work with the government for policy support and the private sector for management assistance. Although it and similar enterprises will all fall under one parent company, they will work independently in their communities. In Phuket, four products have been selected for promotion and branding: pineapple, lobster, goat milk, and organic vegetables. The committee will also develop tourism and the product-processing technique of batik.
