Highlands School District assessments go beyond academics

The Highlands School District has adopted a three-pronged approach to evaluating students that focuses on academics, behavior and social development. Most assessment systems focus on academics, but the Highlands approach recognizes that failure in any of the three facets can block a child's progress.

For example, if a child is not learning, he is likely to misbehave. If he misbehaves, he will not learn.

The Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS) strategy has earned statewide recognition and won grants for Highlands. The program can help students who might otherwise end up in special education, even though they do not have a disability. For students with disabilities, the special-education path is still open.

Highlands has received $200,000 in state grants in the last five years in recognition of the success of MTSS.
