Virginia Tech has received a research grant from Microsoft corporation to look into uses for this technology. The researchers were affiliated with the Institute for Creativity, Arts, and Technology and the Center for Human-Computer Interaction. They received $100,000 toward their work. They call this project the "meteorological immersion project."

More generally, the scientists are attempting to find applications for multiple users to collaborate on scientific and learning projects in a mixed reality environment.
