Putting college within reach: UW students make use of state, federal grants

As college-level education costs are on the rise, 11,000 University of Wyoming students receive millions of dollars in federal and state financial aid ($60 million in scholarship and grants and $48 million in student loans during the 2014-2015 academic school year.

78% of all undergraduate Wyoming residents received some sort of financial aid. Most of the federal funding comes in the form of Pell Grants, which are awarded to students based on financial need as opposed to educational merit.

Since 2006, in-state students have also been taking advantage of the Hathaway Scholarship. According to University of Wyoming Board of Trustee member Mike Massie, the Hathaway Scholarship was implemented for two primary reasons: "The Legislature formed the Hathaway Scholarship Fund to encourage greater achievement in high school and to reduce financial barriers for students to attend a college or the University in Wyoming, and it's performed both of those goals admirably."

Wyoming residents who graduated before 2006 are not eligible for the Hathaway Scholarship.
